(From a wedding photographer who’s seen it all – including a groom who forgot his trousers)
Let’s be real, being in front of a camera can feel a bit weird. You’re in a fancy outfit, emotions are flying everywhere, someone’s aunt is crying and the best man is sweating like he’s on Mastermind. And then there's me, lurking (charmingly) in the background with two cameras strapped to me like a photography version of Batman.
But here's the secret: your wedding day isn’t a photoshoot. It’s your day. And I’m not here to bark orders or make you pose like you're in a 90s boyband reunion. My job is to capture the real stuff, the laughs, the looks, the messy, magical bits that make your love story yours.
So, if the idea of a camera pointing at you all day is making your palms sweat, breathe easy. Here are my top tips for feeling relaxed in front of the lens on your big day (and having a laugh while you’re at it).
🎯 1. Don’t worry about posing – that’s my job
Honestly, you don’t need to know what to do with your hands. I’ll guide you gently when needed, but mostly I’ll just let you be. You two doing your thing, chatting, laughing, having a little smooch, makes for way better photos than stiff, formal ones. Promise.
🍷 2. Have a glass of something (but maybe not five)
A cheeky drink can help take the edge off, especially during prep. But pace yourself, nobody wants to see Uncle Dave holding your hair back during the couple portraits.
🥸 3. Ignore me
I mean it I’m a bit like a photography ninja. I blend into the background, I don’t bark instructions, and I definitely won’t be asking you to “say cheese.” Just enjoy the moment, I’ll catch the magic as it happens.
😄 4. Get silly – it helps
Feel like pulling a face? Go for it. Wanna spin your partner around like you're in a romcom? I’m here for it. The more you lean into having fun, the more natural and gorgeous your photos will be. No one looks good when they’re holding in a fart and trying to smile through it.
🧠 5. Remember why you’re here
You’re marrying your favourite person. That’s the whole point. Focus on them, not me. When you’re in the moment, the camera fades into the background, and that’s when the best shots happen.
📷 Bonus tip: Pick a photographer you vibe with (hi, I’m Scott 👋)
You don’t need to be a model, you just need someone behind the camera who makes you feel like yourself. That’s my whole thing. I blend in, I make you laugh, and I get the job done without turning your wedding into a fashion shoot. If you’re still worried about the camera, let’s have a chat before the big day. I’m always happy to grab a coffee (or hop on Zoom) and talk through how I work, what to expect, and how we can make sure you actually enjoy being photographed.
It’s Your Day – Own It
Being relaxed in front of the camera isn't about being perfect, it's about being you. Whether you’re camera-shy, camera-curious or secretly living for the attention, I’ve got you. So let’s ditch the awkward poses, keep things fun, and capture your day exactly how it felt. And hey, if all else fails, just look lovingly at your partner and pretend I’m not there. Unless I’m holding snacks. Then you can definitely look at me.
